IMO Extractive Metallurgy Scholarship 2015
Timothy Wakeham has been awarded the 2015 IMO Extractive Metallurgy Scholarship, at IMO’s International Met’s Day held on 11 September 2014. Tim is currently completing a double degree in Extractive Metallurgy (Bsc) and Chemistry (Bsc) at the Murdoch campus in Western Australia.
Tim has worked part-time as a Metallurgical Technician for the past 4 years at a laboratory south of Perth, where he is involved in hydrometallurgy pilot plant programs and testwork programs for a number of projects. Tim will focus his thesis on bio-leaching of copper with arsenic and explore other project type work with nickel in his studies in 2015.
Tim’s dream job is to work as a Plant Metallurgist on a remote mine site in Australia or overseas. His attraction to study Metallurgy originated from his keen interest in chemistry and machinery, coupled with the travel opportunities to experience different cultures and environments.
Tim is also Vice President with the AusIMM Murdoch Student Chapter, and enjoys participating in a range of activities such as fundraisers, BBQ’s, presentations and mentoring the younger students. In addition to this, Tim plays basketball, volleyball and does the occasional rock-climbing to keep fit.

35th International Intercollegiate Mining Games – Colorado
Proudly Sponsored by IMO
In March 2013, the Murdoch Mets sent their first ever team to represent the university and compete in the International Mining Games. The 35th International Intercollegiate Mining Games was hosted by the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado and attended by over 40 teams from universities across America, Australia and Europe.
The annual competition consists of seven team events, each of which celebrates a certain aspect of the history and heritage of the mining industry. The events are based on the traditional mining methods which include; swede saw, track stand, hand steel, mucking, gold panning, air-leg drilling and surveying. Each event is physically and mentally demanding and aims to encourage the students to appreciate the development of modern practices within the industry.
The Murdoch Mets came in second place for the gold panning event and were awarded a trophy to bring home, which has been proudly placed on display at the university.
The Murdoch Mets have expressed a sincere thankyou to Independent Metallurgical Operations for their sponsorship and continual support, which enabled the team to attend the event.
