At IMO, we highly value trust and relationships. This is characterized by the company burgeoning from a long friendship between founding directors, Dave Symons and Steve McGhee.
Dave and Steve met at university, studying metallurgy in the early 1980s. Following their graduation, the friends separately worked for mining companies in Australia and overseas. By the late 1980's, Dave and Steve had directed their talents to the highly regarded Normet metallurgical test facilities, where they respectively ran the Darwin and Townsville facilities.
With the knowledge gleaned from operating successful metallurgical facilities, Dave and Steve used company director roles and experience in engineering firms to build on their skills.
By 1998 the pair had created an ambitious plan to develop a world-class metallurgical facility that would help mining and exploration companies reach their full potential. Hence, Independent Metallurgical Laboratories - IML (now known as Metallurgy Pty Ltd) was born.
The laboratory's success highlighted another area of need - the use of metallurgy to maximise a mining business. Dave and Steve then created Independent Metallurgical Operations (IMO) which, in its 20 years of operation, has assisted 500 projects across every continent.
