About IMO

The founding directors of IMO, Dave Symons and Steve McGhee, first crossed paths while studying metallurgy at the university back in the early 1980s. After completing their degrees, each went on to hold different positions at various mining organizations both in Australia and abroad.

In the late 1980s, their extensive knowledge and experience led them to direct their skills towards Normet metallurgical test facilities, where they established an impressive track record. Driven by an unwavering commitment to excellence, they developed a plan in 1998 to establish a world-class metallurgical facility, with a singular aim to help mining and exploration companies reach their full operational potential. That’s how IMO was founded.

As IMO Laboratories continued to flourish, the directors realized a critical gap in the interpretation and application of metallurgy into processing and process design. This led to the formation of IMO, which, for more than two decades, has provided unmatched support to over 500 projects across all continents. Today, IMO is a leading operation in the metallurgical industry and continues to provide clients with expert solutions that address their unique needs.

In 2023, IMO partnered with Pares&Alvarez, a leading engineering house from Chile, with a strong track record in Lithium, Copper and tailings projects.

Our Vision

“To be a leader, continually improving and value adding for our clients, maximizing the potential of the resources available through either conventional or innovative technologies.”

The mining industry encompasses three key disciplines: metallurgy, geology, and mining engineering. Of these, metallurgy is unfortunately often misunderstood and overlooked, particularly given the budget and time constraints that mining projects typically face. Nonetheless, involving metallurgy in the early stages of a mineral project’s lifecycle can prove to be an astute decision, as it ultimately helps mitigate risks, enhances mine design, and optimizes project profitability.

As such, by prioritizing metallurgical considerations, mining companies can more effectively execute projects and secure key stakeholders’ confidence and trust. In today’s competitive mining environment, maximizing the return on investment (ROI) and minimizing potential issues is of paramount importance. Hence, involving metallurgy professionals at the earliest possible stage of a project is a wise decision that can have a significant impact on a project’s outcomes.
